The Best Beaches Around Clohars-Carnoët
Clohars-Carnoët has nearly twelve kilometres of coastline between the river Laïta and the Atlantic Ocean — which means you're spoilt for choice when it comes to laying down your towel. Here's our pick of the loveliest beaches within easy reach of the guest house.
Grands Sables beach
This is Le Pouldu's flagship beach: a vast expanse of fine sand, supervised in season, ideal for families. At low tide it opens up generously, offering a perfect playground for sandcastles, kite-flying or a long barefoot walk. A few shops and nearby parking make it the most convenient beach in the area.
Bellangenêt beach
A favourite among surfers and bodyboarders, Bellangenêt catches the swell nicely. It's also a beautiful spot to watch the sunset out over the open sea. A surf school runs lessons here in season — a great idea for a slightly breezy afternoon.
Le Kérou beach
Tucked between the rocks, Le Kérou has a more intimate charm. The tidal pools delight children who set off hunting for crabs and shrimp. It's the perfect place for a quiet morning, away from the bustle.
Saint-Maurice beach and the Laïta estuary
On the river side, Saint-Maurice beach offers a completely different feel: calmer waters, a wooded setting and views over the Laïta estuary. You reach it through a corner of forest, and the site of the former Saint-Maurice abbey is well worth the detour. Ideal for swimmers who prefer a sheltered sea.
Which beach, and when?
A few pointers to make the most of it:
- For families: Grands Sables, vast and supervised.
- For surfing: Bellangenêt, which catches the swell well.
- For little explorers: Le Kérou and its rock pools.
- For a sheltered swim: Saint-Maurice, on the estuary side.
Do check the tide times before you set off: in Brittany the landscape changes completely between high and low tide, and some coves only reveal themselves at low water.
From the studio, most of these beaches are a few minutes' drive away, and several can be reached on foot or by bike along the coastal path — enough to change scenery every day of your stay.
